The Pragmatics of Coaching: Words That Make a Difference

Coaches often ask, Does it really matter how I phrase my questions? Pragmatics—the study of how language works in practice—offers a resounding yes. In coaching, language is not just a tool for expression; it is the very material through which new realities are authored. 

In this keynote, Dr. Haesun Moon introduces interfluence: the subtle ways meaning is shaped and reshaped between people in conversation. Drawing on the Dialogic Orientation Quadrant (DOQ) and examples from Coaching A-Z, she will show how everyday coaching choices—whether we ask Suppose instead of If, or frame a story as yet rather than never—can shift what clients see as possible. These are not stylistic flourishes; they are conversational moves with consequences.

Grounded in communication science and illustrated with real coaching dialogue, this session invites coaches to listen differently: to notice not just what is said, but how language works in context. Participants will leave with a sharper ear for coaching language, and a renewed appreciation for how each utterance, no matter how ordinary, can quietly re-author a client’s reality.

About Dr. Moon:

Dr. Haesun Moon is a communication scientist, author, and educator who teaches at the University of Toronto and serves as a faculty member at the Institute of Coaching, a Harvard Medical School affiliate. She is the creator of the Dialogic Orientation Quadrant (DOQ), a framework used globally to understand and improve conversations in coaching, leadership, and education. As the founder of Pracademia, she bridges research and real-world practice with wit, warmth, and scholarly insight. Her work makes the science of human connection accessible, equipping leaders and learners with practical tools for more meaningful dialogue.
